What are alternative fuels?

Ethanol as an alcohol-based alternative fuel

Ethanol is an alternative fuel produced based on alcohol by the fermentation and distillation of crops such as corn, barley or wheat.

The highlight of ethanol is that the materials are renewable and produce less gas emissions. It can also be mixed with gasoline to increase octane levels and improve the quality of emissions.

However, the dependence on the availability of the crops mentioned, greatly increases the price of ethanol.

Electricity as the greenest option on the market

Electricity is the best known alternative fuel for vehicles. We refer to electric vehicles and those that run on batteries, which are slowly opening a gap in the automotive sector.

Battery-powered electric vehicles store energy by connecting it to a standard electrical source that can be found at certain points.

Therefore, electricity for transport is highly efficient and despite the fact that today a lot of electricity is generated from coal or natural gas, thus emitting carbon, electric vehicles are still the most ecological option on the market in the sector of the car.

Natural gas to produce less harmful emissions

 

Natural gas is another alternative fuel that is burned and that today is available through utilities and companies that provide natural gas to homes and businesses.

The positive aspect is certainly that when used in specially designed natural gas vehicles, they produce far less harmful emissions than gasoline or diesel.

However, like the rest of the alternatives, the production of natural gas in this case creates methane, a greenhouse gas that affects global warming.

Biodiesel as an alternative fuel based on vegetable oils

Biodiesel is another alternative fuel, but in this case based on vegetable oils or animal fats. It is an interesting alternative since biodiesel is safe and biodegradable. Additionally, it reduces air pollutants associated with vehicle emissions, carbon monoxide, and hydrocarbons.

Vehicle engines can be converted to burn biodiesel in its pure form. Although it can also be mixed with petroleum diesel for use in unmodified engines.

As you can imagine, the main limitation is its production and distribution.

Hydrogen, a less economical alternative

The idea of ​​using hydrogen is that it can be mixed with natural gas to create an alternative fuel without harmful emissions. Mainly for vehicles that use certain types of internal combustion engines.

Hydrogen is also used in fuel cell vehicles. These run on electricity produced by a petrochemical reaction, when hydrogen and oxygen combine in the fuel cell.

And as we already anticipated, the least interesting of this alternative is its price. High due to lack of fuel supply and difficulty in implementing it.

Propane, the alternative fuel with advantages and disadvantages

And lastly, propane. Also known as liquefied petroleum gas or LPG and used mainly for cooking and heating. Its high use in these areas makes it a highly developed infrastructure.

However, even though propane produces fewer emissions than gasoline, natural gas production creates methane. And as we have already explained before, it is a greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming.
